Is your endocrine/immune system down because of dangerous chemicals?

Are you being poisoned without knowing? Your thyroid system may be disrupted because of dangerous chemicals…But there are things you can do to solve this problem….

In my youth, I have to admit, I used many cosmetic products, in order to look pretty (and who didn’t?) Every day I fed my skin with dozens of cosmetic products, as probably you do that too- shampoos, face creams, tonics, make up, lipstick, conditioners, you name it. I also believed that that if these products are sold on the in the stores, someone took the time to check them, had tested them and approved to be safe. Not so folks! FDA (in the USA for example) may not really have your best interest in mind, but I won’t talk about why here. According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics the European Union currently bans over 1,300 chemicals from its cosmetics. In contrast, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has banned or restricted only 11. In the U.S., major discrepancies in federal law allow the cosmetics industry to put thousands of synthetic chemicals into personal care products that are not tested for safety, even if those chemicals are connected to cancer, disruption of the immune and endocrine system, reproduction or birth defects. If you don’t believe me, read for example the book Toxin Toxout by Bruce Lourie and Rick Smith. I was merely shocked when I read it!

Fragrance1Here are just few of the “most” popular ingredients, often found in cosmetics: 1. Sodium lauryl (ether) sulfate (SLS, SLES) is a former industrial degreaser now used to make soap foamy, it’s absorbed into the body and irritates skin (skin rashes anyone?). 2. Toluene: well-known to disrupt the immune and endocrine system, and fetal development, it’s used in nail and hair products (hair falling, by any chance? Itchy scalp??). 3. Triclosan: used in antibacterial products, hand sanitizers, and deodorants, it is linked to cancer and thyroid system disruption. 4. Phthalates: Plasticizers banned in the EU in children’s toys, but present in many fragrances, deodorants and lotions- linked to endocrine disorders, liver damage and cancer.5. Parabens:  used as preservatives, but linked to cancer, thyroid disruption, and reproductive toxicity. 6. Paraphenylenediamine (PPD): used in hair products and dyes, but toxic to skin and immune system. These and many other products I call the “silent killers” of our bodies.

The list above is not complete neither exhaustive. But you get the idea, right?

The older I got, the more I read, the more convinced and scared I became, as I found that cosmetic industry uses thousands of synthetic chemicals in its products, with ingredients that are also used in industrial manufacturing processes to clean industrial equipment, stabilize pesticides and grease machines, all of them deadly dangerous to us. Can we all agree that a substance that effectively cleans your garage floor may not be the best choice to put on your face? And do you know that your conditioner is actually a perfumed fabric softener? Things you don’t know can hurt you and sometimes kill you, and I am not trying to scare you, but to offer you solutions that may help the recovery of your immune system and your health. Every little thing matters and counts, when comes to your health.

So, how all this may affect you?

And as we well know Graves’ disease and Hashimoto’s disease are actually not thyroid disorders; they are disorders of the auto-immune system that target the thyroid. Once compromised, confused and disrupted the poor immune system, instead of fighting viruses, starts wrongly targeting different organs in our bodies: the kidneys, the liver, and in our case the thyroid. You may think that what you eat and drink is all that counts, but no…what you put on your body and face counts even more, since the skin is the largest organ of the body, able to absorb quickly everything we put on it! So, let’s be careful what we use.

Solutions. Managing toxicity and inflammation….

The best solution is not to pollute ourselves in the first place; for example, by replacing dangerous substances with safer ones. Second, read these labels, take that time, it’s worthy. If you find ingredients that are not familiar to you or sound more like Mendeleev’s chemical table, please do not buy. It’s not worth your health!

Third: Try to use natural products, to the best you can. I am not saying you should go broke by buying only organic products (which you could, if money is not an issue!). But sometimes there are simple solution that doesn’t cost so much money or too much efforts. And your body will love it.

What did I do to resolve the chemical poisoning problem?

I love experimenting and even making my own cosmetic products (my last experiment was with aromatherapy oils, which continues). But this “natural making products” happen to be time consuming, expensive (you buy larger quantities of ingredients than you need) and sometimes not so successful. It takes time and money to get all the ingredients, to find recipes, to try and see if they are working. I decided to save myself this trouble…but still use natural products. And then, as the Universe likes to conspire on your behalf when you have the right intentions, I met a woman that makes that all for me, with love, as she says.

Teodora21Her name is Teodora Sheriff, mother of three boys, who is devoted to make you beautiful and more healthy at a very affordable price (the natural deodorant she makes with her own hands costs $8, compared to $6.00 and up store chemical deodorant, for example). Initially, she started to “cook” different cosmetics products for herself and her family only, but then she realized that other people are also in need of these natural products, but they may not have the time, resources or energy so she decided to make it more global. This is what she says:

“I believe that everything we need to enjoy a healthy and happy life is given to us by Mother Nature. We just need to look around and remember. Why use synthetic ingredients in our skin care products when there is a great variety of natural oils and butters. An abundance of oils and butters of any kind of plant, fruit, vegetable, spice, etc. are readily available.

I handcraft all my soaps and lotions with love and joy. I am having so much fun and knowing that my creations are revitalizing for you brings a smile on my face.”

creamHer products contain only a few ingredients, all natural, no preservatives and synthetic/artificial colors, freshly “cooked” upon request. She uses only 100% natural essential oils, dried herbs and flowers, as she explains. And she can even make you a custom order with your favorite ingredients!

I personally have used her natural deodorant, the body butter (I had to restrain myself not to eat it), body scrub and soap, and so far I am very happy with the results- my skin feels soft, smells great and I know that no chemicals were applied to my skin (which by itself feels great as well!). The link to her products is below, indulge yourself! Your body and your face will love these products and will be thankful for not being poisoned and taking such a good care of it!

How I detoxified myself with Aromatherapy and why you should do that too..

As you already probably know me, I like to experiment with everything, especially if it may improve my and other people’s lifestyle and health. My newest experiment was with Aromatherapy, and specifically with DoTERRA Essential oils. The purpose was to detoxify myself and my household to the best I can, which I believe will lead to better health and cleaner environment in general.

ChemicalProductsWhy I started with this experiment on a first place? Recently, I came across a book, called “The Hundred Year Lie” by an investigative journalist Randal Fitzgerald. As the author says, we are constantly exposed to all kinds of toxins, for which are not even aware of- personal care products, cleaning products, over-the-counter and prescription drugs (vitamins and supplements as well) and all of the household cleaning products that you use (and I do too!). Then you should consider all of the chemicals that are applied to our clothing, our bedding and to our furniture. Next, you might want to consider the fluoride in your tap water supply, which is now proven to be toxic to our bodies (but guess what- it’s still there!!).

So speaking, the average American carries a body burden of 700 synthetic chemicals, and the situation is even worse if you live near heavy pollution areas (like most of the cities), eat poor quality food (GMO, sprayed with pesticides, or both), drink unfiltered water with who knows what’s in there, or extensively use chemicals in your household for different purposes. And on the top of that, most people just take it for granted that the products they use must have been thoroughly tested and deemed completely safe to use. Not so, folks. Chemicals and toxins are invading our lives, often bringing serious illnesses and chronic disorders and I believe thyroid disorders are no exception. Dangerous chemicals destroy our immune system- making it underactive (cancer), overactive (allergies) or confused (autoimmune disorders). I’ll not explain here why, but if you’re interested check the book I mentioned above. So, logically, the less chemicals you use, the better your immune system will perform, which is very important for people with thyroid autoimmune disorders.

HeatherAs we all know when you make a decision which is aligned with your “divine purpose”, (in my case  to get rid of unknown, probably dangerous personal care products and cleaning supplies and substitute them with eco-friendly products + essential oils) the whole Universe will start to conspire with you to achieve your purpose.

I  “met” Heather Grant (on Internet of course, where else?), a beautiful young woman, mother of five and she was very kind to introduce me to aromatherapy- as medicine, personal and household care. Because when you meet a mother of five and she starts talking to you should listen as she may have a point.

essensialoils1For the purposes of my  experiment she provided me with 6 DoTERRA essential oils (Lemon, Wild Orange, Peppermint, Lavender, Serenity & Balance combinations). Not much, but it happens they were enough for my experiment. How I did it, what  I’ve learned and done in the past few weeks, what are the results- I want to share all this with you. You’ll be amazed and surprised!!

Not only that: Heather Grant also offered to help spread the world of Aromatherapy…Click on the link below to find out how you can use Aromatherapy for your health, read my recipes and participate in a drawing for a free gift (an essential oil of course!):

Thyroid Tests may lie, Patients and Symptoms don’t..

The enigma about Thyroid Tests

My daughter, 17 years old now, was recently send to the lab to get her thyroid tests done, as a part of her annual physical exam. Surprisingly, her TSH came out of the “normal” range. The paper said that her TSH was 0.32 µIU/mL (reference ranges for that age group 0.50- 4.30), which clearly indicates some kind of a hyperthyroid problem. But she did not have any symptoms at all, and if she did, I would be the first to notice them. Clearly, they got the wrong mother to tell that my daughter may have hyperthyroidism.  I insisted this thyroid test to be repeated and since they never called me again, I assume that it  came out normal this time. How did that happen?

Tests may lie, your symptoms don’t

One thing that I have learned through the years being thyroid patient advocate is that thyroid patients don’t lie, but their thyroid tests definitely may. Many people would report that they have normal test results (i.e their TSH, FT3 and FT4 are within the normal ranges), as per their doctors and lab results, but they still have persistent symptoms (regardless hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism). It is very difficult to get a correct diagnosis of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism because the modern medicine chooses to view laboratory test results as the gold standard and as teh only indicator for diagnosing these disorders.

What does your thyroid hormones mean?

ThyroidGlandNew1Many physicians use TSH results as the only indicator of thyroid disorder. However, TSH is not even a hormone, produced by the thyroid gland, it is a pituitary hormone. Other physicians use T4 is indicator, however, T4 is not the active hormone, it is the T3. As you probably already know, the thyroid gland is specialized in hormone secretion, particularly two hormones: thyroxin and triiodothyronine (respectively T4 and T3).  The only difference between these two hormones is the number of iodine molecules that they contain (respectively 3 molecules and 4 molecules of iodine) but both are extremely significant for managing the body metabolism. The production of these two hormones is practically managed by the production of TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) produced in the pituitary gland and the Thyrotropin-releasing Hormone (TRH), which is released by the hypothalamus. Both organs (hypothalamus and pituitary gland) serve as check points to detect whether or not the organism is getting enough thyroid hormone. The thyroid gland is estimated to secret about 80% of the thyroxin (T4) and 20% of the triiodothyronine (T3). However, the larger quantity of T4 (thyroxin) doesn’t mean that it is the more important hormone. In fact, the active hormone is T3 and some of the thyroxin (T4), through complex chemical processes, is converted to T3.

How the “normal” laboratory ranges are defined?

The “normal” ranges are defined based on the test results of the previous 1000 patients. These 1000 patients are randomly chosen but guess what? These are people who are usually in their middle ages, as young people don’t get tested for thyroid problems regularly. This means that the laboratory will use 47.5% below the average and 47.5% above the average to determine the so called “normal” ranges or “the mean”. But it is obvious, that by using this particular method about 95 of the population should fall within this “normal” range. I highly doubt that this is true and I believe that these normal ranges are very subjective. Not to mention that the optimum thyroid level for one person may not be the same for somebody else.  It’s very much like trying to buy a dress, let’s say size 10. You may usually wear size 10, but dresses differ depending on the material or the model (women know that). So that size ‘10” that you usually wear may not fit at all, regardless that the sale person may insist that the dress is perfect and there is something wrong with you or your thinking. Same with the thyroid tests…

Thyroid Tests Laboratories differ

If you get tested in different laboratories, you may get completely different results because of the method they use, already described above. A reference range is usually defined as the set of values 95 percent of the normal population falls within (that is, 95% prediction interval). But was that 95% of the population really healthy? Normal ranges will also differ from lab to lab depending on sample populations, testing procedures and equipment. Try  different laboratories and see if you don’t believe me.

“Normal” ranges change over time

In 2002, the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (NACB) issued new guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disorders. To prove their guidelines, it was announced that after additional tests the TSH levels of the 95% of the healthy population actually fall within 0.4 and 2.5 µIU/mL. Almost immediately after that, in 2003, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists supported NACB, saying that for TSH “normal” levels should be considered the ranges between 0.3 to 3.0 µIU/mL. For more than 10 years later these ranges hasn’t changed. Which also means that if you went to a doctor in 2002 and your levels were let’s say 2.6, you won’t be considered hypothyroid, you will not be treated and you will be dismissed, regardless if you do have or do not symptoms.

Thyroid levels differ during the day

Thyroid levels may fluctuate during the day and they depend also on other medications you may be taking, supplements, hormones and even stress. However, many lab technicians fail to advise their patients to come early in the morning, before any breakfast and food. It is no requirement, as I have found. This alone can throw you in or out of the normal ranges with a blink of an eye. But then your medication may be increased, or reduced, based on this thyroid test results alone.

Your basal temperature matters or how to get more correct results

Measure your basal temperature: Normally, the average temperature of an adult with a healthy thyroid and a healthy metabolism is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit or 37.0 degrees Celsius, and that occurs around mid-afternoon or 3 pm. But have in mind that if you measure your temperature before getting out of bed in the morning the basal temperature should be between 97.8 – 98.2 F or 36.6 to 36.8 degrees Celsius (using a normal thermometer under the arm for ten minutes). So, if you take your mid-afternoon temp and find it under this range, that may be an indication that you may have hypothyroidism and/or you are undertreated. If it is above this reference range, you may be hyperthyroid. One last thing: do not use a cell phone at least 30 minutes prior to taking your temperature, it will be affected. For a free temperature graph, check Dr. Rind website:

http://www.drrind.com/forms/tg_blank.pdf

What should you do?

1. Try to schedule your thyroid tests early in the morning and try not to consume any food in the past 12 hours.

2. If your test results come “normal” but you are experiencing unexplained symptoms or you still have symptoms even though declared “normal” do not hesitate to ask for this thyroid panel to be repeated in a few days.

3. If still in doubt, chose another laboratory so you can compare the results (and your doctor as well).

4. Ask your doctor to interpret the result in the context of your overall medical condition and symptoms to determine if there is reason for concern.

If you have any experience with “strange” test results, or you still have symptoms, but “normal thyroid test results, share your experience, it may help other people as well.

Goiter, thyroid nodules and thyroiditis of the thyroid gland

Thyroid structureMany people today are confused with the different complicated thyroid terms, used by the doctors to classify their condition and the situation gets worse when they are sent home without further explanation. Recently, I received a lot of emails from patients, stating that they have a goiter and don’t know what to do to improve their condition.

First, we need some clarification here. Goiter is not a “thing” that people have, like cancer. Goiter is a thyroid condition, and more specifically an enlargement of the thyroid gland. That enlargement can be very visible, like a small ball, or invisible to the human eye. It can cause pain in the neck, tenderness and sensitiveness when touched, hoarse voice, pain the throat, coughing etc. If you feel uncomfortable or sensitive in this particular area it is advisable to schedule a preventive check-up with your doctor.

The thyroid enlargement also could be due to different reasons, some of them contradictory, so they have to be explored with caution. For example, the goiter/ goitre can be caused by underactive thyroid gland (known as Hashimoto’s thyroditis or hypothyroidism), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland), different nodules ( cancerous or not cancerous) or thyroditis (general inflammation of the thyroid gland).

The causes for the goiter condition need first to be assessed before proceeding with treatment, change of diet or looking for alternative treatments on Internet. The diagnostic procedure may involve thyroid scan, biopsy of the nodule (if there is one), thyroid tests and thyroid ultrasound. It is a complicated, but necessary procedure to determine the origin of this thyroid condition.

If the cause is underactive thyroid, then medication like L-thyroxine can be prescribed. If it is due to overactive thyroid, then the patient could be offered medication, RAI or surgery. Nodules can also be treated surgically or with radioactive iodine (which generally shrinks the thyroid gland), but that procedure is even more dangerous than surgery as it may affect other organs as well. Since in some countries the goiter is due to a diet which lacks enough quantities of iodine, then a change of diet could be recommended.

My point here: if you are told by your doctor that you have a goiter, then the next step will be to determine the origin of your enlarged thyroid, before proceeding or agreeing to any treatment. Guessing is not an option, or it may cause further negative health consequences. For more information on goiter, check here:

If you have any experience with thyroid diagnostic procedures, different treatments or just your experience, please, do not hesitate to share.

Aloe Vera for Graves’ Disease/ Thyroid Eye Disease

Did you know that nearly every known dis-ease is caused from inflammation? Including our Hyperthyroidism and Graves’ Disease, not to mention Thyroid Eye Disease... It just so happens that the ancient Aloe Vera plant has turned out to be one of the most extraordinary anti-inflammatory plants in all of creation.

Apparently no matter what started your inflammation and pain, the natural ingredients within Aloe Vera is bursting with anti-inflammatory ability plus all this is based on real science to back it up. Aloe Vera is about 99% pure energized water “intelligently designed” by Mama Nature to contain more than 75 key ingredients including vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids and miracle super sugars. If you are looking for a simple way to improve your overall health and well being, including your immune system (and we need that most of all!), Aloe Vera provides you with a potent smorgasbord of helpful cellular nutrition.

As you already know I am experimenting a lot with all kinds of natural products, and I am a “one man” laboratory, needless to say. I’ve never recommended anything to anyone that I haven’t tried or researched thoroughly, it’s just prefer to be sure what I am talking about.

So, since I got rid off Graves’ Disease several years ago, I was asking myself how do I keep it away. Yes, I did changed many things, my life style especially, but still, the nutritional and diet part wasn’t covered. I wanted to eat everything without any concerns and be as healthier as possible (with this dirty environment around us!). I experimented with a few natural products and supplements, but the best results I got from using a few products containing Aloe Vera. It’s not that you never heard of that, but still, we are not doing it, right?

I was also looking for the most natural/ organic products or company, not any product in general, that I can afford and will not cost me a fortune. I was introduced by a friend of mine to the Aloe Vera family, and since then, 2 years now, I am using only their products, because I know that they are 100% natural, even the stabilizers used in the cosmetics.

Today, I’m trying to put only natural products in my mouth (I mean toothpaste, food is another topic here), I even use Aloe Vera to wash my clothes and clean my house,  the shampoo and conditioners are too with Aloe Vera,  face creams, and of course the Aloe Vera juice (there are 4 different to choose from- and not the one sold in GNC, sorry), also herbal formulas, vitamins and supplements. Everything that I need for my health and cosmetics I prefer to buy it with Aloe Vera. But listen- not any Aloe Vera…a special one.

What I actually did is that I changed my shopping store- instead of going to Publix, Walmart or Kroger, or any other general store for that matter, I shop from one company and they have a wide variety of products, for practically anything you and your family need to stay healthy.  They are very economic also, you can use the “fluoride free” toothpaste for 4 months or more, 1 bottle of Aloe Vera gel for 2 months (if you have a particular health problem- then you need 1 cup every day), the face cream for 5-6 months…

Since I am using these products I haven’t practically been sick even with the occasional flu.  I even didn’t notice that until recently, when I was cleaning the drawer with over-the counter medications and I noticed that I haven’t used them at all. So here we go, I’ll stop talking, you give it a try..

Feel free to browse the products, they have offices world wide, so if you live in Australia, or  United Kingdom or  Malaysia, it will be delivered by the offices there so you don’t pay oversea shipping fees. If you don’t know what to order, send me an email with your symptoms and complains and I’ll tell you exactly what you need, or what I would use..

The other good thing is that if you decide to become a distributor you actually get paid to shop, and you’ll receive 15% off immediately of all products, life time, no other requirements (there is a minimum order requirement, but it’s different for different countries.

If you don’t want to do that of course, you can use my personal sponsor

 2. Forever A-Beta- CarE (contains Selenium and all anti- oxidants listed in my previous email)

 3. Forever Arctic Sea ® (can be used as a substitute for Flax seed oil)

 4. Forever Vision® – improves the general eye condition, a lot!

 5. Aloe Moisturizing Lotion-  This unique lotion has outstanding moisturizing properties for the skin;

 6. Aloe Vera Tooth Gel- I love this tooth gel, as it contains no fluoride (which we well know has a good contribution to Hyperthyroidism).

 7. Forever Alluring Eyes®. (eye cream). Keep in a refrigerator for best results.

 8. Forever Immublend- great product for supporting the immune system, especially helpful when that immune system is not doing well.

 9. Aloe Vera Gelly (I use that refrigerated for under my eyes, or any other skin irritations), helps puffiness, at least mine..

(P.S. Note that none of the above products are FDA approved. This statement is not endorsed by Foreverliving.com, it’s my personal observation and recommendation on the subject)
