7 Strategies to deal with Graves’ disease mental symptoms and negative emotions.

Graves’ disease (or any thyroid disorder for that matter), as we all know, come with a nice set of mental symptoms like irritability, emotional liability, nervousness, restlessness, depression, anxiety and worrying, to name a few…

It’s a well-known psychological fact that emotions feed your thoughts and thoughts feed your emotions. If you feel angry, sad, frustrated etc. and keep thinking about the person or situation that caused you feel that way, you will “fuel” these emotions even more. That’s a never-ending circle but you can choose different emotions or different thoughts to break that vicious circle. How this happens in practice?

The emotional container of every person can hold up only certain quantity of emotions, it’s not expandable. It can hold up, let’s say, up to 2 gallons of emotions, not more. And you can fill out this container, so speaking, with whatever you want. Do you prefer joy, or sadness, or something else? It’s up to you!

There are also a few strategies that I used, and I still use to keep my negative emotions under control:

  1. Exaggerating worry strategy and designating a special day of the week for your negative emotions.  Let’s say you choose Fridays to worry, be sad, self-pity yourself or be angry..This is your special day but only on this day you’re allowed to have your negative emotions. Postpone if they happen another day of the week. You’ll be surprised that this psychological trick really works!
  2. I am challenging you on this particular day to take a short break and start worrying about everything that comes to your mind: your job, your money, your mortgage, your husband, your kids, your parents, about global warming and politics, about deadlines and health. Start worrying and continue this way to the point where you become one big walking “Worry” and nothing else.
  3. Now, let’s turn this upside down  or, as I like to say, flush this emotional toilet. Replace these very “unproductive” thoughts and turn your worries into: What if only good things happen to me… What if…. I find a better job, my kids do well at school, they are healthy, kind and understanding, my parents are in good health, my husband /wife wants to cook me a dinner or take me out, I have enough money, I finish my projects on time and so forth. What you gonna do with all that goodness that come on your way? You get my point. When these types of thoughts fill up your emotional toilet there will be no space left for the negative ones. We can worry about positive things as well, if we choose to do so.  It’s that simple.
  4. Cultivate gratitude. Every night before going to bed grab a notebook and list just 3 things that you are grateful or blessed for (only for that particular day).  These could be things like: food on your table, roof over your head, the beautiful day outside, the rain, the nice sales person, the time you had to rest, a promotion at work, nice conversation with a friend, good news about something. I am sure you can come up with something worth writing down.
  5. Meditation can help you deal with Graves' Disease

Meditation can help you deal with Graves’ Disease

Meditate or take some time off for yourself, even 30 min. and do nothing. Or put this 30 min on your to do list and do whatever you want.  I promise, this simple strategy will recharge your energy and make you feel better. I’ve dedicated a whole article about meditation to convince you how good this is for you.

6.  Know that to climb more you should generally carry less. To hear more, talk less. To succeed more, assume less. To gain more, resist less. To excel more, compete less. You’ve heard that from me before. So speaking, simplify your life and focus on just a few priorities (multitasking is not a fashion any more). That simple method will relieve your stress tremendously and make you feel much, much better.

Passion7. Make passion part of your life. This picture came to me through Facebook, (don’t forget to LIKE us:) and I decided to share that with you as a strategy of coping with negative emotions, because there is nothing that can charge us more than incorporating passion in our lives. Passion is also connected with creativity and as we know, the throat chakra is responsible for creativity. So speaking express yourself with passion! What’s your passion? Planting flowers, writing, sports, hobbies of any kind. Find out what you’re passionate about and do more of that. Doing or creating something with passion will fill up your emotional container with positive emotions (so, there will be no place for negative emotions).

I have to admit that these strategies, regardless how simple and mundane they look, require patience, discipline and consistency. You’ll be creating new habits, but healthy ones, but it’s worth trying.

Happy flushing your emotional toilet! 🙂

If you have your own strategies and experience you want to share, please do so on my blog below…You can’t even imagine how many people you can help.

Stress and Thyroid problems. How to fix them both.

There is no doubt that stress is a high risk factor in patients with thyroid auto-immune disorders, as found also in a research by Kung, and posted in Clinical Endocrinology in 2008. We speculate at large that stress in our lives caused all kinds of problems. And all people in fact have stress in their lives! However, the above and some other researchers discovered that patients with Graves’ disease experienced greater psychological stress and adverse events prior to the onset of the disease.  They also concluded that as stress may change the immune system (no surprise!), it could play an important role in precipitating the disease in patients predisposed to auto-immune thyroid disorders- namely Graves’ disease and Hashimoto’s.

So speaking, stress might be causing your thyroid problems to a big extend but what can you do to stop that stress madness?  Can you  subtract the unnecessary and add just the meaningful to achieve peace of mind, tranquility, harmony and better health? (not necessarily in that order!).

How would your life change if you owned less stuff, did a few things only and said “no” more often?

I’ve discovered a few things that may help you figure it out and simplify your life!

Click here to find out what simplicity did for me and how you can achieve that peace of mind too:

How to deal with thyroid antibodies and fix your immune system

4 Methods that can improve your thyroid antibodies, strengthen the immune system and help Graves’ disease and Hyperthyroidism symptoms

Graves’ disease, Hashimoto’s, Rheumatoid arthritis, Addison disease, Diabetes Type 1, Lupus etc. are disorders of the auto-immune system.  One of the differences between them is that they affect different organs. Many people suffering from Graves’ disease or Hashimoto’s disease have a compromised immune system but they wrongly target the thyroid itself through RAI treatment and thyroid surgery. The thyroid is the victim, not the offender!

AutoImmuneDisease

But is there a way to help and treat the immune system in such a way that the thyroid will heal itself and reverse the autoimmune condition, regardless if it is Graves’ disease or Hashimoto’s? It happens there is! I’ve listed 4 methods that I know and researched (some of them I even tried) that help the immune system to recover, check for details below:

How to recover your auto-immune system, improve thyroid antibodies and reverse Graves’ disease

Stress and Thyroid Disorders. What can you do about it?

Neurology, Stress and Thyroid Disorders. Stress as one of the causes of thyroid disorders and what can you do about it?

In the past 10 years, I’ve been asked repeatedly by many people what exactly causes thyroid disorders, and especially the autoimmune type. Apart from the pure psychosomatic explanation and the many other contributing factors I can enlist, the only other thing that came to my mind, in one word, is “stress” or inability to deal with it, in general. But that is only on the surface. Everyone is under stress, no doubt about that. How we handle that stress and specifically how those of us diagnosed with thyroid disorder handle it is totally another question. There is a growing evidence in the scientific field, discussing the relation between stress and auto-immune disorders, and I have to admit I am not surprised, I am actually convinced that one of the major factors for triggering Graves’ disease, hyperthyroidism or any other auto-immune disorder for that matter is exactly stress. The simple explanation about how stress affects us is demonstrated with the so called Vasomotoric cycle, first explained by Gerda Boysen, in 1980s. Graves’ disease patients can easily find themselves in the upper left corner of the pictured, “fixed” in the charging and expression mode.

VasomotoricCycle1

But there is one thing, that can actually help stress management: this tool is 100% free, safe to use,  easy accessible, and requires very little of your time. The results are profound, even only after 8 weeks of use, as proven by the scientific research so far and by my personal experience on the subject.

Graves’ disease, hyperthyroidism and the power of 30 minutes

Is your endocrine/immune system down because of dangerous chemicals?

Are you being poisoned without knowing? Your thyroid system may be disrupted because of dangerous chemicals…But there are things you can do to solve this problem….

In my youth, I have to admit, I used many cosmetic products, in order to look pretty (and who didn’t?) Every day I fed my skin with dozens of cosmetic products, as probably you do that too- shampoos, face creams, tonics, make up, lipstick, conditioners, you name it. I also believed that that if these products are sold on the in the stores, someone took the time to check them, had tested them and approved to be safe. Not so folks! FDA (in the USA for example) may not really have your best interest in mind, but I won’t talk about why here. According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics the European Union currently bans over 1,300 chemicals from its cosmetics. In contrast, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has banned or restricted only 11. In the U.S., major discrepancies in federal law allow the cosmetics industry to put thousands of synthetic chemicals into personal care products that are not tested for safety, even if those chemicals are connected to cancer, disruption of the immune and endocrine system, reproduction or birth defects. If you don’t believe me, read for example the book Toxin Toxout by Bruce Lourie and Rick Smith. I was merely shocked when I read it!

Fragrance1Here are just few of the “most” popular ingredients, often found in cosmetics: 1. Sodium lauryl (ether) sulfate (SLS, SLES) is a former industrial degreaser now used to make soap foamy, it’s absorbed into the body and irritates skin (skin rashes anyone?). 2. Toluene: well-known to disrupt the immune and endocrine system, and fetal development, it’s used in nail and hair products (hair falling, by any chance? Itchy scalp??). 3. Triclosan: used in antibacterial products, hand sanitizers, and deodorants, it is linked to cancer and thyroid system disruption. 4. Phthalates: Plasticizers banned in the EU in children’s toys, but present in many fragrances, deodorants and lotions- linked to endocrine disorders, liver damage and cancer.5. Parabens:  used as preservatives, but linked to cancer, thyroid disruption, and reproductive toxicity. 6. Paraphenylenediamine (PPD): used in hair products and dyes, but toxic to skin and immune system. These and many other products I call the “silent killers” of our bodies.

The list above is not complete neither exhaustive. But you get the idea, right?

The older I got, the more I read, the more convinced and scared I became, as I found that cosmetic industry uses thousands of synthetic chemicals in its products, with ingredients that are also used in industrial manufacturing processes to clean industrial equipment, stabilize pesticides and grease machines, all of them deadly dangerous to us. Can we all agree that a substance that effectively cleans your garage floor may not be the best choice to put on your face? And do you know that your conditioner is actually a perfumed fabric softener? Things you don’t know can hurt you and sometimes kill you, and I am not trying to scare you, but to offer you solutions that may help the recovery of your immune system and your health. Every little thing matters and counts, when comes to your health.

So, how all this may affect you?

And as we well know Graves’ disease and Hashimoto’s disease are actually not thyroid disorders; they are disorders of the auto-immune system that target the thyroid. Once compromised, confused and disrupted the poor immune system, instead of fighting viruses, starts wrongly targeting different organs in our bodies: the kidneys, the liver, and in our case the thyroid. You may think that what you eat and drink is all that counts, but no…what you put on your body and face counts even more, since the skin is the largest organ of the body, able to absorb quickly everything we put on it! So, let’s be careful what we use.

Solutions. Managing toxicity and inflammation….

The best solution is not to pollute ourselves in the first place; for example, by replacing dangerous substances with safer ones. Second, read these labels, take that time, it’s worthy. If you find ingredients that are not familiar to you or sound more like Mendeleev’s chemical table, please do not buy. It’s not worth your health!

Third: Try to use natural products, to the best you can. I am not saying you should go broke by buying only organic products (which you could, if money is not an issue!). But sometimes there are simple solution that doesn’t cost so much money or too much efforts. And your body will love it.

What did I do to resolve the chemical poisoning problem?

I love experimenting and even making my own cosmetic products (my last experiment was with aromatherapy oils, which continues). But this “natural making products” happen to be time consuming, expensive (you buy larger quantities of ingredients than you need) and sometimes not so successful. It takes time and money to get all the ingredients, to find recipes, to try and see if they are working. I decided to save myself this trouble…but still use natural products. And then, as the Universe likes to conspire on your behalf when you have the right intentions, I met a woman that makes that all for me, with love, as she says.

Teodora21Her name is Teodora Sheriff, mother of three boys, who is devoted to make you beautiful and more healthy at a very affordable price (the natural deodorant she makes with her own hands costs $8, compared to $6.00 and up store chemical deodorant, for example). Initially, she started to “cook” different cosmetics products for herself and her family only, but then she realized that other people are also in need of these natural products, but they may not have the time, resources or energy so she decided to make it more global. This is what she says:

“I believe that everything we need to enjoy a healthy and happy life is given to us by Mother Nature. We just need to look around and remember. Why use synthetic ingredients in our skin care products when there is a great variety of natural oils and butters. An abundance of oils and butters of any kind of plant, fruit, vegetable, spice, etc. are readily available.

I handcraft all my soaps and lotions with love and joy. I am having so much fun and knowing that my creations are revitalizing for you brings a smile on my face.”

creamHer products contain only a few ingredients, all natural, no preservatives and synthetic/artificial colors, freshly “cooked” upon request. She uses only 100% natural essential oils, dried herbs and flowers, as she explains. And she can even make you a custom order with your favorite ingredients!

I personally have used her natural deodorant, the body butter (I had to restrain myself not to eat it), body scrub and soap, and so far I am very happy with the results- my skin feels soft, smells great and I know that no chemicals were applied to my skin (which by itself feels great as well!). The link to her products is below, indulge yourself! Your body and your face will love these products and will be thankful for not being poisoned and taking such a good care of it!

I am Graves’ Disease

A letter I received recently, below, and because it’s so true, I thought I should share with you. I may help family or friends to understand what you are going though. So, it starts like that:

Hi. My name is Graves’ Disease…

1441175_612130972166955_8955644_nI’m an invisible autoimmune disease that attacks your thyroid gland causing you to become hyperthyroid.

I am now velcroed to you for life.

Others around you can’t see me or hear me, but YOUR body feels me.

I can attack you anywhere and any way I please.

I can cause severe pain or, if I’m in a good mood, I can just cause you to ache all over.

I can make you hyper, not just your thyroid. Then make you drop like a stone: people will probably start to think you’ve manic depression, doctors certainly will.

Remember when you and energy ran around together and had fun?

I took energy from you, and gave you exhaustion. Try to have fun now.

I can take good sleep from you and in its place, give you brain fog and lack of concentration.

I can make you want to sleep 24/7, and I can also cause insomnia.

I can make you tremble internally or make you feel cold or hot when everyone else feels normal.

I can make you feel very anxious or very depressed, too. I can also cause other mental health problems.

I can make your hair fall out, become dry and brittle, cause acne, cause dry skin, the sky is the limit with me.

I can take your, you won’t be able to remember what you wanted to say two minutes ago. I can even make you forget words, names and events.

I can make you loose weight no matter how much you eat.

I can make your thyroid gland swell so much it hurts to eat, while making you so hungry you have to eat all day long.

I can make your eyes swell too-so that they pop out of the socket.

Some of my other autoimmune disease friends often join me, giving you even more to deal with.

If you have something planned, or are looking forward to a great day, I can take that away from you. You didn’t ask for me. I chose you for various reasons.

I thrive on stress. You may have a family history of me. Whatever the cause, I’m here to stay.

I hear you’re going to see a doctor to try and get rid of me. That makes me laugh. Just try. You will have to go to many, many doctors until you find one who can help you effectively.

You will be put on the wrong medication for you, pain pills, sleeping pills, energy pills, told you are suffering from anxiety or depression, given anti-anxiety pills and antidepressants.

Even when they do know it’s me, you’ll spend years trying the right medications, you may have the parts I attack removed or killed to get rid of me. That wont work-I’ll still be here, and I’ll still attack you.

There are so many other ways I can make you sick and miserable, the list is endless – that high cholesterol, gall bladder issue, blood pressure issue, blood sugar issue, heart issue among others? That’s probably me.

Can’t get pregnant, or have had a miscarriage?

That’s probably me too.

Teeth and gum problems? TMJ? I told you the list was endless.

You may be given a TENs unit, get massaged, told if you just sleep and exercise properly I will go away.

You’ll be told to think positively, you’ll be poked, prodded, and MOST OF ALL, not taken seriously when you try to explain to the endless number of doctors you’ve seen, just how debilitating I am and how sick you really feel. In all probability you will get a referral from these ‘understanding’ (clueless) doctors, to see a psychiatrist.

Your family, friends and co-workers will all listen to you until they just get tired of hearing about how I make you feel, and just how debilitating I am.

Some of them will say things like “Oh, you are just having a bad day” or “Well, remember, you can’t do the things you use to do 20 YEARS ago”, not hearing that you said 20 DAYS ago.

They’ll also say things like, “if you just get up and move, get outside and do things, you’ll feel better.” They won’t understand that I take away the ‘gas’ that powers your body and mind to ENABLE you to do those things.

Some will start talking behind your back, they’ll call you a hypochondriac, while you slowly feel that you are losing your dignity trying to make them understand, especially if you are in the middle of a conversation with a “normal” person, and can’t remember what you were going to say next. You’ll be told things like, “Oh, my grandmother had that, and she’s fine on her medication” when you desperately want to explain that I don’t impose myself upon everyone in the exact same way, and just because that grandmother is fine on the medication SHE’S taking, doesn’t mean it will work for you.

The only place you will get the kind of support and understanding in dealing with me is with other people that have me. They are really the only ones who can truly understand.

I am Graves’ Disease.

How I detoxified myself with Aromatherapy and why you should do that too..

As you already probably know me, I like to experiment with everything, especially if it may improve my and other people’s lifestyle and health. My newest experiment was with Aromatherapy, and specifically with DoTERRA Essential oils. The purpose was to detoxify myself and my household to the best I can, which I believe will lead to better health and cleaner environment in general.

ChemicalProductsWhy I started with this experiment on a first place? Recently, I came across a book, called “The Hundred Year Lie” by an investigative journalist Randal Fitzgerald. As the author says, we are constantly exposed to all kinds of toxins, for which are not even aware of- personal care products, cleaning products, over-the-counter and prescription drugs (vitamins and supplements as well) and all of the household cleaning products that you use (and I do too!). Then you should consider all of the chemicals that are applied to our clothing, our bedding and to our furniture. Next, you might want to consider the fluoride in your tap water supply, which is now proven to be toxic to our bodies (but guess what- it’s still there!!).

So speaking, the average American carries a body burden of 700 synthetic chemicals, and the situation is even worse if you live near heavy pollution areas (like most of the cities), eat poor quality food (GMO, sprayed with pesticides, or both), drink unfiltered water with who knows what’s in there, or extensively use chemicals in your household for different purposes. And on the top of that, most people just take it for granted that the products they use must have been thoroughly tested and deemed completely safe to use. Not so, folks. Chemicals and toxins are invading our lives, often bringing serious illnesses and chronic disorders and I believe thyroid disorders are no exception. Dangerous chemicals destroy our immune system- making it underactive (cancer), overactive (allergies) or confused (autoimmune disorders). I’ll not explain here why, but if you’re interested check the book I mentioned above. So, logically, the less chemicals you use, the better your immune system will perform, which is very important for people with thyroid autoimmune disorders.

HeatherAs we all know when you make a decision which is aligned with your “divine purpose”, (in my case  to get rid of unknown, probably dangerous personal care products and cleaning supplies and substitute them with eco-friendly products + essential oils) the whole Universe will start to conspire with you to achieve your purpose.

I  “met” Heather Grant (on Internet of course, where else?), a beautiful young woman, mother of five and she was very kind to introduce me to aromatherapy- as medicine, personal and household care. Because when you meet a mother of five and she starts talking to you should listen as she may have a point.

essensialoils1For the purposes of my  experiment she provided me with 6 DoTERRA essential oils (Lemon, Wild Orange, Peppermint, Lavender, Serenity & Balance combinations). Not much, but it happens they were enough for my experiment. How I did it, what  I’ve learned and done in the past few weeks, what are the results- I want to share all this with you. You’ll be amazed and surprised!!

Not only that: Heather Grant also offered to help spread the world of Aromatherapy…Click on the link below to find out how you can use Aromatherapy for your health, read my recipes and participate in a drawing for a free gift (an essential oil of course!):

The Happiness Factor and Thyroid Disorders

Despite the recent advances in diagnostic procedures and development of new techniques for removing or damping down the function of the thyroid gland, the enigma of thyroid disorders (Graves’ Disease, Hashimoto’s disease, hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism) remains unsolved. Why the thyroid starts functioning abnormally, why anti-thyroid medication can succeed in decreasing the function of the thyroid gland in some people and not in others, cannot be explained by the so called science.

Living in the “thyroid world” for almost a decade I came across many heartbreaking stories from clients through the years convincing me that thyroid disorders are not due only to chemical imbalance, as the science is trying to assure us, but also due to many other factors sometimes invisible for us at a first glance. (click on the picture to enlarge).

TheCycleOfSickness1

I came to realize that our environment (social, family and work) has a tremendous role for the onset of thyroid disorders. Not only that: stress (chronic or single traumatic event) often acts as a trigger. Certainly, everyone has stress of all kind but how we handle it is another question. The reason why some people handle it and others cannot be explained with special personality traits and personal characteristics (so called the Five Big Personality traits). “Thyroid people” possess a unique combination of these personality traits, allowing them to accumulate stress and stay in highly stressful situations until they get literally physically or mentally sick. Additionally to that, their basic needs are not met on a constant basis (so speaking: belongingness, validation, nourishment, sensory and sexual need), all this generally due to lack of sufficient self-esteem. A person with adequate self-esteem (not self- confidence!) will protect his boundaries, will know what is good or bad for him or his body, will not exhaust his mind for the sake of others, will not overwork himself to the point of exhaustion, will be able to say “no” when necessary. The list is not exhaustive or complete. To examine the self-esteem specific domain (which I believe is one of the most important when talking about treating thyroid disorders) please, read and check below which of these you proudly possess (Be brave, I am not watching).

  1. Overworking yourself to the point of exhaustion.
  2. Not taking good care of yourself.
  3. Suffering and going above and beyond your limitations, physical or mental, so that others can feel good and happy.
  4. Not able to say “no” when you feel you need to do so.
  5. Tolerating and accepting assaulting behavior, unnecessary criticism and people causing you harm.
  6. Blaming yourself for all the things that went wrong.
  7. Trying to be responsible for everybody, for their actions and behavior.
  8. Doing things for people whom you don’t like.
  9. Being very critical to yourself and others.
  10. Difficulty knowing who to trust and when to trust.
  11. Thinking that other people are focuses on and critical about what you say or do.
  12. Tendency to let fear and anxiety control many of your decisions.
  13. Avoiding making changes in your life because you are fearful of making a mistake or failing.
  14. Being very fearful of criticism, disapproval, or rejection.
  15. Feeling guilty because you have your own needs and desires.
  16. Staying in and keeping relationships that are abusive, insulting, or offensive.
  17. Fulfilling unreasonable demands, because you are hungry for the approval of others (you can admit it to yourself, I am not judging you).
  18. Feeling like a victim of people and circumstances and as a result, becoming emotionally stuck and immobilized.
  19. Being unable to affirm or reinforce yourself positively even though, let’s face it, you are an overachiever.
  20. Being unable to make an honest assessment of your strengths, qualities, and good points, thus, you find it difficult to accept compliments or recognition from others.
  21. Making decisions based on what would please others, rather than on what you want or without even considering what you want.
  22. Feeling that others mistreat you, or take advantage of you.
  23. Being unable to speak up for yourself.

If you checked many of the above items, you, my friend, are in big trouble which is the cause of your sickness. You have to change your mind, right now. Because low self-esteem, besides the “action” side (things that we do as a result of this low self-esteem), also has an “emotional” side, unfortunately. As a result of all of the above “wrong doings”, people with low-self-esteem are very likely to accumulate a bouquet of negative emotions like (check again): anxiety, sadness, irritation, frustration, annoyance, emotional sensitivity and liability, hostility, shame, aggression, resentment, embarrassment, loneliness, lack of spontaneity, constant self-doubt, and insecurity, this is just unavoidable. At some point, that all will result in inability to handle stress and life challenges in general. Do you see now how it is all related? Then the disease (thyroid or not) is just a step away.

Working on your self-esteem is one of the most important factors in your healing process, believe it or not. I am not saying that it is an overnight cure, but it is an important starting point. Then everything will start to fall into place and your healing will begin!

How do you work on your self-esteem and is it possible to change that domain? Yes, it is. More resources are included in my new book “Mental, Emotional and Psychological Aspects of Thyroid Disorders”, now available on Amazon, Kindle and Nook (or check the links below). To further prove my point that your mind can indeed help the healing of your thyroid, I am giving away 30 free coaching sessions (1 hour each), first come first served basis. You’ll also need Skype installed on your computer (a free program) and a camera, these are real sessions. You’ll have to send me an email to mythyroid@gravesdiseasecure.com with: transaction # for the book purchase, your skype ID and your best preferable time for the session (please, convert your time zone in EST), so I can offer you a few options for the session. I am specifically interested in coaching people with their thyroid still intact (if possible), those who are highly motivated to reverse their disease or desperate people who think that “nothing helps” their condition. Looking forward to help you!
